Make sure you don’t drill larger than the vinyl you cut out as it could rip the vinyl off and you’ll have to recover the whole thing. We opt to only use premium hydraulic components because they last longer than the cheap alternatives that are available. Even after a good flushing, the capillary tubes are usually somewhat coated with deposits and so they don't cool like they did when they were new. Air inside original Sprite cooling systems (unlike sealed modern designs) contributes to corrosion and reduced efficiency. Aluminum radiators work better because they offer superior heat transfer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou'll notice we are not huge fans of electric cooling fans. We have found these to be wonderful for slow speed parades or in traffic but in most cases, they seem to block air flow at speed and REDUCE radiator efficiency. We feel that the best line of defense is the best radiator with an upgraded engine driven fan.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour Sprite operating temp should run at about 180 degrees (or less). It may climb to 200 in traffic, sometimes a little more. Most classic cars spend more time sitting than driving and as such, can loose their prime in the fuel system. Float bowl fuel evaporates between drives when the car sits for prolonged periods, so the carbs have to be refilled with fresh fuel before the car will start. If you have the stock mechanical pump, this can take a lot of cranking, and can kill your battery. Original mechanical fuel pumps have a priming lever, but new replacements do not. We much prefer the electric pump, which primes instantly and saves battery power for cranking the cold engine.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe other big issue with mechanical pumps has to do with diaphragm failure, which we see often, and can result in fuel pouring out of the pump not too far from a hot exhaust. Moreover, mechanical pump failure can lead to filling your sump with fuel, and trashing your oil and bearings, since the pump is block mounted. And they can also allow engine oil to leak too if the gasket is no good.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOur fuel pump kit eliminates these ills, and has everything you need to mount the pump and go electric. We use a solid state pump without points and have never had one fail on the cars we prepare. We recommend mounting it at the back of the car on the passenger side bulkhead. This puts the pump out of the way and close to the tank.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo install this fuel pump on a negative ground car, take the red wire and install it on the keyed on power terminal on your fuse box. The pulleys are different thicknesses, new water pumps have different thicknesses of flanges than older cast iron ones, sometimes a spacer is needed to get the fan closer to the radiator… even the parts manual for the engines these came off of originally has two different options for bolts, either 1-1\/4” or 1-7\/8” in length.
